Public gets a look at Arts Complex building

Residents of Las Cruces and the surrounding communities attended a meeting on Sept. 22 presented by Holzman Moss Architects of New York and ASA Architects of Las Cruces to get a peak at the Phase 1 schematic design of NMSU’s Arts Complex. Attendees also had an opportunity to comment on the proposed design.

The Arts Complex building will complement the architecture of the region and is meant to connect the NMSU campus to the community. The Arts Complex will be an all-stone, environmentally friendly structure made from materials found within a 500-mile radius of Las Cruces. In addition, the rehearsal hall will have windows from floor to ceiling so everyone can see inside.

“The meeting showed us not only the incredible beauty of the new building, but inspired us to see its total possibilities,” said Tom Smith, academic department head with the Department of Theatre Arts Department. “Having community input on a project like this means that it is truly a building for all of Las Cruces.”

Phase 1 of the Arts Complex will include a state-of-the-art sustainable building approximately 50,000 square feet. There will be a performance space for drama and dance, performance support areas, public spaces, classrooms, offices and building support areas. Funding for Phase 1 of the Arts Complex will appear under the General Obligation Bond, Ballot D, which will be voted on in November.
