NMSU ranks in top tier of U.S. News & World report National Universities

September 13, 2012 by Emily C. Kelley, NMSU News Center

New Mexico State University has moved into the top tier of the U.S. News & World Report Best National Universities rankings, one indicator that NMSU provides students with a high quality, affordable education.

NMSU ranks 189 this year, which is a reflection of the many improvements the university has worked toward in recent years, including NMSU President Barbara Couture’s Graduation Job One as part of the university’s overall Goals for Success.

The rankings indicate that the graduation rate at NMSU is much higher than what U.S. News & World Report had predicted. This is an important sign that our efforts are helping our students succeed with their academic goals.

“I’m pleased to see this new ranking and want to thank our faculty and staff who have worked hard in key programs such as the freshman mid-semester Check-In/Check-Up, the Red to Green financial literacy program and our free tutoring programs to engage students to ensure their success,” said NMSU President Barbara Couture. “We will continue to focus our efforts on making graduation job one at NMSU.”

As New Mexico’s land-grant research institution, the move into the top tier of the U.S. News & World Report National Universities confirms the university’s place among the top institutions in our nation. This new ranking will provide NMSU greater visibility for the work the university does, which will foster future recruitment, grants and collaborations with other institutions.

NMSU also has been named among the top 25 national universities producing students graduating with the lowest student loan debt loads. According to the report, only 49 percent of NMSU undergraduates had student loan debt when they graduated with their bachelor’s degree. NMSU is the only New Mexico school to achieve this distinction. Low or no student loan debt upon graduation helps set NMSU students up for career success.
