Bachelor of Accountancy

The Bachelor of Accountancy major attracts a variety of students, but those most suited for accounting have a desire to work with people. Successful accountants have a solid business and accounting knowledge base, and have developed their analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. Our program is designed to provide such an educational background. It is also appropriate if you choose to seek either the Master of Accountancy or the MBA degree after graduation.

The accounting curriculum is designed to prepare you for the excellent career opportunities that exist in public accounting practice and in business, government, and nonprofit organizations. Undergraduate accounting majors take a minimum of 30 credits of accounting – including financial, managerial, auditing, taxation, and accounting systems – plus advanced courses in business law, economics, and other elective areas. A Sample of Accountancy Occupations

Our Bachelor of Accountancy degree program provides a solid foundation for career paths in public accounting (auditing, taxation, consulting) as practiced in large, medium, and small firms; corporate accounting (including financial management, controllership, treasury, financial analysis, planning and budgeting, cost accounting, internal audit, systems, taxation, and general accounting); and government and nonprofit accounting.

Who Hires Our Accountancy Graduates?

NMSU accounting majors are recruited extensively by employers in public accounting practice and in corporate, governmental, and nonprofit organizations. Accounting employers come from all over the nation to recruit at NMSU, and while most of our graduates begin their careers in or near New Mexico, recent graduates have jobs with national accounting firms in locations such as Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.
