What is Distance Education?

  • Distance ed courses are taught by qualified, full-time NMSU faculty who provide instruction by non-traditional means such as through the Internet.
  • NMSU is one of 40 schools throughout the world designated as a WebCT (Web Course Tools) institute.

Is Distance Education right for me?

  • You need to have substantially completed the prerequisite coursework (freshman and sophomore years).
  • You need to be highly motivated to succeed in this non-traditional educational environment.
  • If your career requires you to move too often to complete your degree; you want to complete your degree, but your schedule conflicts with classroom attendance; or you’re place-bound, you might want to consider distance education.

What should I expect?

  • Faculty use a combination of distance ed technologies, including web-based interactive tools such as Discussion Boards, Email, Chat, and Quiz, as well as customized interfaces.

What will my instructor expect from me?

  • You need daily access to the Internet so you can communicate frequently with your instructor and other team/class members.
  • Many distance ed courses are time intensive and require extensive writing.
  • While the distance ed program is a great way to learn outside the confines of a university setting, it is not equivalent to a “write-away” degree.

What do I need?

  • Daily access to the Internet.
  • Minimum computer requirements: Windows 98 Microsoft.
  • PC or Mac: Internet Explorer, Netscape or AOL.
  • Experience with the Internet and email-based communication.
