Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Arts: Economics

Economics is important to consumers, business managers, those who determine government policies, and anyone who is curious about the way people earn their living. Economics explains why prices rise or fall; why incomes are high or low; why people live better in some countries than in others; why recessions and unemployment occur; and why governments play active roles in the economy.

Professional economists earn their living answering questions like those above. They work for banks and other financial businesses, for federal, state and local governments, for large corporations, for colleges and universities, and for other employers. Some are self-employed as consultants or business owners/managers.

Course offerings include Latin American economic development, economics of the border region, public finance, labor, natural resources, health care, sports, and public utility regulation. You will be prepared for a variety of careers ranging from those as economists in business, government and nonprofit organizations to the law.

Degrees Offered through the College of Business

BBA: Economics

The BBA in Economics is especially appropriate for students who intend to take jobs in business or government, perhaps without additional formal education beyond the bachelor’s degree. It is also excellent preparation for the degree of Master of Business Administration. See the Degree Plan/Sample Schedule.

BA: Economics

The BA in Economics is suitable for students who plan to go on to graduate school in economics, law, business, or other areas. It has the advantages of including a large number of general electives, and thus provides considerable flexibility for individuals in the choice of courses. See the Degree Plan/Sample Schedule.

Degree Offered through the College of Arts & Sciences

BA: Economics

The BA in Economics enables a student who is in the College of Arts & Sciences (and who has met the education requirements of that college) to major in economics without changing colleges. It is a popular degree for students who are majoring in both economics and a second subject in the College of Arts & Sciences.
