How does College work?
Studying a Major…
A major consists of the specific set of classes you take during college.
For example, if you majored in Accounting you would take a different set of classes than if you majored in Management. Some students graduate with multiple majors, or combine majors with one or more minors. A minor is a smaller (or secondary) specialization that requires fewer courses or credits than a major.
You typically “declare” your major during your Freshman year.
…leads to earning a Degree
A college degree is awarded to you when you have satisfactorily completed the course of study for your major. Basic examples of some degrees are:
- Associate’s degree: Successful completion of a 2-year undergraduate course of studies.
- Bachelor’s degree: Successful completion of an entire course of undergraduate study.
- Honours degree: A university degree with honors.
- Master’s degree: Higher than a bachelor’s degree but lower than a doctor’s degree.
- PhD: One of the highest earned academic degrees.
