Overview

The faculty of the Ph.D Program in Business Administration at New Mexico State University is committed to training researchers and educators who will shape marketing scholarship, practice, and pedagogy. The program emphasizes preparing candidates to understand the complexities of modern business while they develop a specialized area of expertise in marketing.

Goals and Objectives

The broad goal of the Ph.D. Program is to provide students with the theoretical, research and applied capabilities to pursue successful careers in academia, consulting, and administration. Students are expected to achieve the following goals:

  • Obtain a general theoretical grounding in the disciplines of business and a thorough understanding of the literature in their area of concentration.

  • Develop research skills to identify, diagnose, test and act on issues of interest to organizations, marketing managers, and relevant social systems. Specifically, students will be prepared to conduct original research that expands the knowledge base of their field. In addition, students should develop skills in communicating knowledge through written and oral presentations.

  • Acquire an understanding of ethics, values, and integrity related to professional activities and personal relationships.

Financial Aid

We provide a strong financial package of assistantship, which includes slightly more than $20,000 in annual assistantship monies for teaching and research activities. In addition, many of our students benefit from tuition and merit-based fellowships.

Support for Research and Publication

From their first semester, students are encouraged to work on research and publishing. After their first year, students are expected to submit a manuscript to a refereed journal or national conference. In the last five years, research our doctoral candidates started at NMSU has been published in journals such as Journal of Business Research, Psychology & Marketing, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Consumer Marketing, The Academy of Marketing Science Review, Journal of Electronic Commerce Research, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Marketing Education, Health Marketing Quarterly, International Marketing Review, and Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship.

Serving as Instructors

During their first semester, students are often asked to team-teach a course with a professor. In subsequent semesters, students are responsible for teaching a course under the guidance of a professor. Students teach a variety of courses while enrolled in our Ph.D. program.

Distance Education

Students learn the concepts and technologies necessary for distance learning, especially interactive television and the Internet. Students typically teach at least one Internet-based course while enrolled in our program.

Attending Conferences

Students are encouraged to participate in and submit their research to regional and national academic conferences. Our department often defrays some of the costs associated with attendance.

Collegiality

The Department of Marketing at New Mexico State University prides itself on maintaining one of the most collegial environments of any department worldwide. Our students are respected, helped, and treated like future colleagues rather than mere subordinates.

Awards and Placement

Research awards earned by our students include best paper awards at the Society for Marketing Advances and American Marketing Association Educators’ conferences, and research grants from our college. In the last five years, our graduates have been hired at academically strong universities with diverse missions. Just a few examples include affiliations with Auburn University, Creighton University, Hofstra University, Tennessee State University, University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth, University of Southern Mississippi, University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, Utah Valley State, and Villanova University.
