Business Degree Curriculum
Overview
There are five components of the course work required for a degree from the College of Business. The major courses, upper division business courses, and VWW courses are listed on each major’s degree plan.
General Education
This component consists of lower division courses.
Most “G” courses represent general education courses required for all NMSU students seeking a bachelor’s degree. In some cases, College of Business faculty have selected “G” courses that best meet the needs of business majors and have narrowed the list of courses from which you may choose.
For example, business students seeking to satisfy the Human Thought and Behavior requirement must take psychology or choose from a limited number of other courses rather than selecting from the longer list in the catalog.
The additional courses, beyond those that NMSU requires for all students, provide background and perspective necessary for upper division business courses.
Completion of ENGL 111G and either CCDM 114N or MATH 120 satisfies NMSU’s basic skills requirements in English and Math. Until these are completed, NMSU prohibits enrollment in upper division courses.
Lower Division Business Core Courses
These core courses are required of all business majors and are prerequisites for upper division business core courses. They include:
- Two Accounting courses (ACCT 251 and 252);
- BCIS 110G, Introduction to Computerized Business Systems or C S 110G;
- BUSA 111, Business in a Global Society, and
- Two Economics courses (ECON 251G and 252G).
“General education courses and lower division business core courses are listed in the College of Business Degree Plans and must be completed prior to enrollment in upper division business courses. If you are in your last semester of the lower division checklist courses you may enroll in upper division Viewing a Wider World courses and business courses to fill out your schedule.
Upper Division Business Core Courses
These are courses required of all business majors and cover all of the major business disciplines. Three of these are BUSA courses that integrate several business disciplines.
- BUSA 365 should be taken during your junior year.
- Beginning Spring 2008, BUSA 365 will no longer be offered. Instead, take MKTG 303 and one of the following: MGT 344, MGT 470, or BCIS 485.
- BUSA 421 and 422 should be taken consecutively during your senior year.
- An upper division business course can be substituted for BUSA 422.
- With the exception of Information Systems (IS) majors who must take ECON 405, you can select an upper division elective either in Economics or Experimental Statistics (excluding E ST 311G).
Major Courses
The department administering a major establishes the courses for that major; for example, the Management Department administers the Management major and the General Business major.
Requirements for all of the business majors are in the NMSU catalog.
Sample class schedules (provided with each major’s degree plan) indicate the desired sequencing of courses and assist you in planning your course work.
Viewing a Wider World (VWW)
These are upper division general education courses required of all NMSU students.
Every student must take two courses designated as VWW classes, one in each of two different colleges other than the College of Business. Courses that can be used to satisfy the VWW requirement appear in the NMSU catalog; those courses taught during a specific semester are listed in the front of the NMSU Course Schedule for that semester.
Other methods of meeting this requirement are listed in the NMSU catalog.
General Electives
These are courses which are necessary to achieve the 128-credit minimum required for graduation.
Most general electives must be selected from outside the College of Business so that the you have a minimum of 64 credits (50%) from colleges other than the business college. Credits obtained outside the College of Business can include 9 credits of Economics and 6 credits of Statistics.
