Registration Problems

Why do I have a “hold” that prevents me from registering? There are several reasons you may have a registration hold.

  1. You are a new student who has not been advised. In this case, you need to consult a College of Business advisor in Guthrie 109, 575-646-3836. After you are advised the “hold” will be lifted.
  2. You are on academic warning or academic probation. This hold is identified in “VIEWHOLDS” in MyNMSU as ACADEMIC STANDING, ACADEMIC SANCTIONS OR ACADEMIC WARNING/PROBATION. Click here for instructions on contacting an advisor.
  3. You may need to pick up documentation concerning your Mid-point Degree Check. In this case you have been sent an email directing you to take a print-out of your STAR degree audit to the department of your major(s).

Why am I not able to register for a particular class?

  1. If the class is an upper division class, you may be prevented from registering if you have not completed your basic skills requirement. Under university policy you may not register for upper division courses unless you first complete your basic skills courses in English and math.
  2. There may be a campus restriction (Campus Restriction). For example, early registration on some of the NMSU community college campuses is limited to students who are community college students. After some period of time, empty seats on those campuses are made available to students on other NMSU campuses.
  3. There may be a program restriction (Program Restriction). Some sections of classes are limited to students in a particular major. Check the catalog to find out whether this is an issue for the course in general. Then check to see if other sections are available without the restriction.
  4. You may be missing a prerequisite for the class in which case you will receive a “PREQ/TEST SCORE” error. For example, students registering for BUSA 421 must first complete a number of prerequisites. If you lack one or all of the prerequisites, you will not be able to register for BUSA 421. Register for the prerequisite. If you have taken the prerequisite, but did not take it at NMSU, we must code that in Banner or do an over-ride to allow you to register. Contact the Advising Center at 575-646-3836. Leave a message if you are transferred to voice mail.
  5. “Level Restriction” indicates that you are not eligible to register for a course numbered 500 or above since these are available only to graduate students.
  6. If you receive a “Closed Section” error when you try to enroll in a class, the class is full. You will need to seek instructor consent to add the class.

How do I get help with computer problems related to registration? Contact the ICT HelpDesk at 646-1840 to get assistance in unlocking your MyNMSU account or resetting your PIN.

Degree Requirements

How do I know what I need to do to complete a degree in the College of Business? Run a STAR degree audit. It will match the courses you have taken against the degree requirements for the major and catalog year that you select.
Are there any requirements other than completion of the required courses for my degree? See page 2 of mid-point degree check.

General Advising

Who is my advisor? Until you have completed your lower division requirements, you will be advised by the staff in Guthrie 109, either by a graduate assistant or one of the full-time staff members. If you wish to meet with the same person each time, you are welcome to do so. Once you complete your lower division requirements you are assigned to a faculty advisor in the department of your major. If you wish to change your faculty advisor, simply contact the department of your major and request a change.

What do I do if I can’t find my advisor in the office? If a faculty advisor is not available at the time you visit the advisor’s office, please check for posted office hours and return at that time. If the advisor is not in the office during regular office hours (especially in the summer), please seek assistance from the department of your major (on the second floor of the Business Complex).

How and when do I get advised? Advising assistance can be obtained at any point during the academic year from faculty advisors and from the staff in the Student Services Office/Advising Center in Guthrie 109. The heaviest periods for advising are at the start of each semester and during the period just before and during the start of registration for the next semester. During these periods you may find it especially difficult to receive speedy responses from the advising staff in Guthrie 109.

What do I need to bring when I meet with an advisor? Generally you should prepare to meet with an advisor by printing a copy of your STAR degree audit. You should also do your homework by looking at the information available on the web to see if you can answer your question without meeting with an advisor. This can save your time and the advisor’s time. If you cannot answer your own question, make sure that you can state your question clearly.

STAR Degree Audit Questions

What is my catalog year? If you do not specify otherwise, the College of Business advising staff will select the catalog year of your first admission at NMSU. You may select more recent catalogs if you wish. The STAR audit will automatically bring up the most recent catalog but allows you to select any other catalog that has not yet expired (any catalog less than 6 years old).

What do I do if I have received approval for a substitution but it does not show up in my STAR audit? Email the College of Business records specialist, Janie Wagoner providing your Aggie ID and specific information about the substitution and how you know that it was approved.

How many credits of electives do I need? You will need at least 128 credits to graduate with a degree from NMSU. If you complete all of the courses required for your degree and do not have the total required for your degree you will need to take electives to get to the required total. That is, if the required courses total 119 credits, you will need to take 9 credits of electives.

Why aren’t my courses being counted in the proper category? The audit is a tool and has limitations. An exception may need to be entered into the audit. Please contact Janie Wagoner in the Advising Center.
