How Advising Works & What You Need to Know
What We Do
College of Business advisors are available in the Guthrie Hall Advising Center and in the college’s academic departments.
Advising is mandatory in the college during your first year and when you complete the lower-division requirements; then a faculty advisor is assigned to you. Students who fail to follow the rules may be blocked from registering without first seeing an advisor.
Throughout the year, we supply you with additional advising information by e-mail, US mail or the phone. Be sure the contact information you provide to NMSU is current.
What You Do
According to NMSU’s Undergraduate Catalog, the student bears ultimate responsibility for planning an academic program in compliance with university, college and departmental regulations. We will do our best to make sure that you have the information that you need to make good decisions, but to accomplish that we need to have an up-to-date postal address and phone number. Your @nmsu.edu email address is your official email address for NMSU communications. Check it regularly or forward your university email to your preferred address. In addition, please provide the university with accurate permanent and local addresses and phone information.
Best Practices
- At the start of each semester record important dates from the NMSU Academic Calendar and your class syllabi on your calendar.
- Realize that schedule changes and the timing of those changes have financial implications; information on financial matters can be obtained from NMSU’s Business Office, Accounts Receivable, and Financial Aid Office, which are located in the Educational Services Building.
- Set up a file or notebook where you keep items such as the catalog and schedule of classes. Later, if you go for advising, you will receive a copy of your advising document that shows the courses you have completed.
- Keep copies of your registration documents, copies of add/drop slips, financial aid information, etc.
