Internships & Cooperative Education (Co-ops)

Learn at Work

Many employers have made a shift in hiring practices and are more interested in employing students who have participated in career-related work programs (”experiential” learning). You can get hands-on, career-related work experience while you earn money for school. Experiential learning can go by a number of names including, internships, co-ops, practicums, service learning, externships, apprenticeships, fellowships, as well as volunteer opportunities. These work experiences give you valuable contacts with future employers and complement your classroom learning.

What Internships & Co-ops are

Internships. An internship is a one-time, curriculum-related work assignment which may be paid or unpaid. These experiences assist students in career decision-making and may improve job prospects upon graduation. Students may also take advantage of opportunities to study elsewhere in the U.S. and abroad. Internships usually occur 10-12 weeks during the summer. Students do not normally repeat an internship. Co-ops. A co-op is a formal contract between the employer, NMSU and you. Cooperative Education (Co-op) is characterized by alternating periods of full-time employment and full-time college attendance, but students may also undertake part-time employment while attending classes. Co-ops can be up to 7 months in duration; for example, May through December. You can return for another work cycle with increased responsibilities and activities. If Career Services has formally approved a co-op, you retain your financial benefits and are considered to be enrolled full-time. An approved co-op means that NMSU Career Services has a formal agreement with the employer, a written job description for the co-op position and a salary. These co-ops are done only through Career Services and have a code that goes on your transcript.
