Can I be postmodern and Taiwanese at the same time?

Abstract

This paper uses postmodernism as an angle to explore the construction
of cultural identity, specifically Taiwanese cultural identity. I
position postmodernism as a lens to see how communication behaviors
influence the process of identity construction. While most research
about identity emphasizes the substance of identity, this paper argues
that identity construction is a process to observe rather than a thing
to be studied. Identity can not be studied from a decisive basis
because it is multiple, fluid, processual and shifting. To support the
postmodern concept of multiple identity, the experiences of Taiwanese
students studying in the USA are examined. It is concluded that
identity construction is influenced by the relationship among
individuals, the cultural environment, and interactions with others.
The concept of Taiwanese as an identity can not be defined from single
aspect, but can be only understood as a marginalized, decentered and
shifting process.
