Bachelor of Accountancy
Often called "the language of business," accounting is a more vital and dynamic field today than
ever before. NMSU offers both Bachelor of Accountancy and Master of Accountancy degrees. Upon
completion of either of these degree programs, a student is prepared to
eventually sit for the
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) examinations.
NMSU accounting majors are recruited extensively by employers in public accounting practice
and in corporate, governmental, and nonprofit organizations. An undergraduate accounting major
will take a minimum of 30 credits of accounting - including financial, managerial, auditing,
taxation, and accounting systems - plus advanced courses in business law, economics, and other
elective areas.
The Bachelor of Accountancy degree program provides a solid foundation for career paths in
public accounting (auditing, taxation, consulting) as practiced in large, medium, and small
firms; corporate accounting (including financial management, controllership, treasury, financial
analysis, planning and budgeting, cost accounting, internal audit, systems, taxation, and general
accounting); and government and nonprofit accounting.
The accounting major attracts a variety of students, but those most suited for accounting have
a desire to work with people. Successful accountants are those who have a solid business and
accounting knowledge base, and have developed their analytical, interpersonal, and communication
skills. The Bachelor of Accountancy program is designed to provide such an educational background.
The Bachelor of Accountancy degree is available to students choosing accounting as a major. The
curriculum is designed to prepare students for the excellent opportunities that exist in public
accounting practice and in business, government, and nonprofit organizations. It is also
appropriate for those who may choose to seek either the Master of Accountancy or the Master of
Business Administration degree after graduation.
Every candidate for the Bachelor of Accountancy degree must fulfill the following requirements
in addition to the requirements for admission to the major and the upper-division business core
courses.

Information Systems
Information systems
(IS) are an essential
component of business
organizations, providing
up-to-date, reliable
financial, inventory,
production, etc. data that
managers need to make
informed strategic business
decisions. As more and more
organizations recognize that
information systems are
critical resources,
information technology use
is moving in new and
exciting directions aimed at
giving organizations a
competitive advantage.
The Information Systems
program is designed to give
students a solid foundation
in software development,
database design and
development, and enterprise
systems upon which they can
build a rewarding career in
the information systems and
technology field.
Specifically, IS students
gain a keen understanding of
the functional areas of
business, knowledge of the
technical aspects of
information systems, and the
analytical skills necessary
to design, develop,
implement and ultimately
manage information systems.
The typical IS student
will graduate with academic
preparation in the following
areas:
- Structured systems analysis and design methodologies, including the use of CASE tools.
- Relational database management systems, including their design, development, manipulation and administration.
- Structured programming techniques, including the use of rigorous internal and external program documentation standards.
- Object-oriented programming and development techniques.
- Development of online systems using a variety of programming languages (e.g. Java, .NET, and scripting languages).
In addition, the IS student will gain knowledge in one or more of these areas depending on the choice of electives:
- Enterprise systems and enterprise resource planning.
- Data communications, networking and distributed processing.
- Information security
and architecture.
The IS program participates in alliances with major software vendors and developers. This gives IS students access to state-of-the-art software and development tools used by organizations worldwide.
