Degree Program

Enrollment in the PGA Golf Management Program is limited to 300 students.  The number of openings each semester depends directly on how many students have graduated.

Minimum requirements set forth by the PGA of America for admission into any program are as follows:

            * University sets the minimum GPA entrance requirement.

            * Golf Handicap of 12 or lower.

Due to the success of and demand for the program, a more stringent process has been implemented at NMSU.  This process equally weighs all applicants grade point averages (GPA's) and golf handicaps.  Again, the number of openings will depend on the number of previous graduates.

Therefore, meeting the above minimum PGA requirements will not guarantee acceptance into NMSU's Program. With this in mind, please note the following:

Since the NMSU program's main goal is to turn out the best educated and well rounded future PGA Golf Professionals, we are currently requiring a GPA of 2.5 or higher and a handicap index of 8.0 or lower to be admitted into NMSU's Golf Management Program.

Again, because of the limited number of positions available, we will first accept students who meet our requirements.  We will then use the minimum requirements set forth by PGA to reach the 300 student maximum limit.

To be considered, please be aware of the following:

You must apply to both the NMSU Admissions Office as well as the NMSU PGA Golf Management office.

Please call the PGA Golf Management office at (575)646-2814 to request more info. Only Fall

applications will be accepted for new students applying for the program.

Spring applications are only for those students who are already attending NMSU.

MINIMUM ENROLLMENT CRITERIA

1.Must have a minimum USGA handicap of 12 or lower, to enter and remain in the program. The program requires handicap documentation, which can be supplied by one of the following methods:

            a. A copy of a handicap card.

            b. Letter from a PGA Golf Professional or Golf Coach.

            c. Complete a Golf Score Verification Form.

            d. Successfully pass the Playing Ability Test (PAT).

2.   The Grade Point Average (GPA) required by the program:

            a. Requires a minimum GPA of 2.5 for incoming students.

            b. Requires a minimum GPA of 2.0 to remain in good standing.

We first will accept students who meet our requirements, as stated on page 1. We then look at the above stated requirements to reach the 300 student maximum.

If a student does not meet the current NMSU program requirements, but meets the university requirements, it is recommended that interested students attend NMSU as a Pre-Business major. If after the first semester a student has passed at least 9 credits with a GPA of 2.5 or higher and has a golf handicap of 8 or lower, the student would be accepted into the NMSU program for the upcoming semester.

3. Although not required, it is highly recommended for any prospective student (and family) to visit the university and the PGA Golf Management Department at some time prior to attending. This will enable the prospective student to tour the university, golf course, community, and meet with the program's Director, Golf Coach, Housing, Financial Aid and Admissions Office.
