While many 24-year-olds are trying to figure out what they want to do with their lives, Jessica Morales is already running her own insurance business. The 2008 New Mexico State University graduate said she always knew she wanted to own her own business and worked her way through the ranks to make it happen.

“I love it. I love insurance and making sure my clients’ needs are met,” Morales said. “It can be tough when an accident happens. I want my clients to know that I am here for them.”

Morales is the exclusive agent and owner of the Jessica Morales Agency, an Allstate Insurance agency in Santa Teresa, N.M. She started at the office more than five years ago under the previous owner in customer service. Later, she was promoted to sales producer and then the office manager – all while attending NMSU fulltime.

In November she was offered the position of exclusive agent, but said she wanted to finish school first. Morales graduated from NMSU in May 2008 with a degree in agricultural economics and agribusiness with a minor in business administration and economics.

“Jessica was a tremendous student with a great deal of drive and determination,” said Jerry Hawkes, one of Morales’ former professors. “She also looked very closely at how the topics in class related to the ‘real-world’ applications that she could employ in the future. Jessica was an outstanding student in many ways, and I am certain she will continue this throughout her professional career.”

“I love NMSU,” Morales said. “I love the atmosphere and I love the professors. They taught me what I needed to know in terms of owning a business. They taught me every step of the way.”

Despite her young age, Morales said her clients have been very supportive of her in her new career.

“They love it because they have already seen my face for the last six years at the agency. They are used to seeing me and having me help them. I haven’t heard anything bad from any of them,” she said. “Everyone’s insurance needs are different, and I am here to help determine what coverages are needed to protect them and their loved ones.”

Morales’ current focus is on expanding her business and letting customers know her agency also handles financial as well as insurance services.

Morales is a Gadsden High School graduate and still commutes to work everyday from her home in Anthony, N.M. She plans on returning to NMSU soon to begin working on her MBA in the College of Business.
