A golf tournament to raise funds for a scholarship in memory of a New Mexico State University PGA Golf Management™ graduate who recently passed away takes place in El Paso this weekend.
Jeff Gomez, 34, an El Paso native who graduated from the PGA program in 2000, died on June 1. Within weeks of Gomez’s death, friends, family and NMSU alumni raised more than $12,000 to establish a memorial scholarship in his name. Pat Gavin, director of NMSU’s PGA Golf Management™ program, is leading the fundraising efforts.
“Jeff was a great student and friend and I look forward to meeting his family and friends at the tournament,” Gavin said. “We hope to raise between $5,000 and $7,000 at the tournament, which would bring the scholarship endowment up to just under $20,000.”
The golf tournament, hosted by the university’s PGA Golf Management Program™, tees off at 1 p.m., Saturday at the Vista Hills Country Club in El Paso. Gomez’s parents will be attending the event.
