Mayfield grad transitioned from basketball to modeling
On June 3, the Miss USA pageant will be aired on NBC, and Las Cruces’ Jessica Martin will be representing the entire state as Miss New Mexico USA.
“I just want to do well and make everyone proud in New Mexico,” Martin said.
For the second year in a row, Miss New Mexico USA hails from Las Cruces, and like Miss New Mexico USA 2011 Brittany Toll, she is a graduate from Mayfield High School.
Martin graduated from Mayfield in 2008 and was a member of its 2007 state champion basketball team.
“I grew up playing sports. I was a big tomboy,” Martin said.“I wanted to be in the WNBA when I was little.”
After she graduated, Martin took a shot at local modeling and in 2010, she decided to run for Miss Border City Queen. She took home the gold.
Martin then competed in the Miss Earth United States pageant, where she took home the title of United States Miss Fire. Martin said she then decided to run for Miss New Mexico.
Not only is Martin Miss New Mexico, but she is also a full-time student at New Mexico State University, as well as an avid community volunteer.
Martin is currently pursuing a degree in business and marketing and would like to get into the sports marketing business.
Ultimately, Martin said she would like to work for a sports network such as ESPN.
…Along with the top 15, the people’s choice award winner also gets to compete in the televised pageant. Anybody is able to vote for the people’s choice award contestant, which began Tuesday, May 1. Supporters can vote 10 times a day through June 2 at www.missuniverse.com/missusa. Toll was the winner of last year’s people’s choice award.
Martin said preparations for the event have kept her very busy. She works out three times a week with a trainer in El Paso and practices her interview questions for the pageant. Martin said when it comes pageant time, any question is possible.
“I just want people to know that it does take a lot of work,” Martin said. “We’re basically on a strict schedule.”
Before she leaves, Martin said she will make sure all of her outfits are ready and lined for wearing. She said there is no time for trying on multiple outfits to find the right one.
“If anybody were to represent us it would be Jessica,” Burden said. “She always has a smile on her face.”
