National publication gives state top honors

Readers of Global Traveler Magazine who voted on the best in business and luxury travel have named New Mexico the Best Domestic Tourism Destination in the magazine’s seventh annual Global Traveler-Tested Reader Survey.

Global Traveler is a luxury travel magazine written for executive business travelers.

“Our survey is unique from others as our readers have the only say,” said Francis Gallagher, publisher and CEO of Global Traveler Magazine. “Our yearly awards are sought after, highly respected and an unbiased reflection of the best in travel from those who know.”

Martín Leger, advertising manager for the New Mexico Tourism Department, said it’s the hard work of the department and citizens alike who have contributed to making New Mexico a top destination for domestic travelers.

“We accept this award on behalf of the citizens of New Mexico,” he said. “Our great state continues to offer opportunity for new exploration, knowledge and adventure. Diverse cultures have shaped this land, its history and its people. Many choices for a fulfilling vacation exist in all parts of the state and these diverse, cultural resources provide a multitude of intriguing possibilities for our visitors.

“We thank the readers of Global Traveler for this prestigious award and the New Mexico tourism family – both the public sector and private industry – for making our Land of Enchantment such a popular destination for travelers from within the region and around the world.”

Changes may be coming to the state’s tourism department. Gov. Susana Martinez, in a press release, indicated that she supports the merging of the state’s departments of tourism and cultural affairs and plans to take action this year.

The awards were announced in the December 2010 issue of the magazine.
