El Paso Electric Company Manager for Customer Contact, Bill Connor, spoke to the College of Business Student Ambassadors on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, in the Business Complex.
Connor was born and raised in Las Cruces, NM, and graduated from Las Cruces High School. While attending New Mexico State University and the College of Business he worked part-time for the El Paso Electric Company. He went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance in 1984 and then worked full time for the utility company. Connor continued with his education and earned his MBA in 2000.
During more than 30 years of service, Connor held various positions with El Paso Electric Company in the areas of customer service, distribution engineering planning, energy efficiency, and process reengineering. In his current role as Manager for Customer Contact, he oversees the Customer Service operations at the three offices in El Paso Electric’s New Mexico service territory as well as three offices in the Texas service territory.
During his career with the investor-owned utility that employs just under 1,000 people, Connor has made it a priority to give back to his community, something he finds very important. He has volunteered for organizations such as the local American Red Cross, March of Dimes, American Cancer Society, Las Cruces Home Builders Association, and the Doña Ana County Legislative Coalition.
Connor shared with the Ambassadors that non-profits have many challenges that present opportunities for volunteering, and provide a great training ground for developing skills, as he has experienced in participating with the Mesilla Valley Economic Development Alliance and the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce Military Affairs Committee.
Connor used these opportunities to hone his leadership and advocacy skills, speaking on behalf of the Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce and Las Cruces City Hall at the New Mexico State Legislature. In addition, he has given presentations in Washington, DC; the Pentagon; and on Capitol Hill. Connor also serves the State of New Mexico as a Commissioner on the New Mexico Military Base Planning Commission and as a board member of the New Mexico Border Authority. His experiences have enabled him to speak with leaders at all different levels of organizations.
