Elaine graduated with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Accounting from NMSU.

Both alumni are owners of The Hatch Chile Store which Preston founded when he was 15 years old. Their business has grown consistently over the past 9 years and has continued to grow; they recently acquired a competitor’s operations, integrating it into their business model.

They said that the skills they learned at NMSU in the fields of BCIS, Marketing, Management, Finance, and Accounting are all used extensively in running their company.

Owning their own business has been a very rewarding experience but also comes with its own challenges.

“Be aware that just because you’re young, people may look down on you.”

They gave advice to any aspiring young entrepreneurs. “Be aware of what you’re trying to do and what the company is trying to achieve.”

Not losing focus of what the company is trying to achieve is critical to success.
