Local business owner Donna Stryker spoke with College of Business Ambassadors on Wednesday, September 23, 2015. She is a co-owner of Strykers Shooting World in Las Cruces, NM, and has also worked in the banking and lending industry since 1973. Currently at First New Mexico Bank, she serves as Senior Vice President for Mortgage and Construction Lending. She has been with First New Mexico Bank since 2003.
A key piece of advice Donna gave to the Ambassadors is the importance of community involvement in leadership. Another critical leadership attribute is having a philanthropy that you are passionate about. Donna specified that one of the things she looks for in a potential employee is whether s/he has given of their time with no expectation of return, one of the ways she was able to make in-roads to her own success. Having the drive to be the best employee – no matter the position – is another thing she advised the Ambassadors to do in order to succeed professionally.
Donna has served on numerous boards and committees. She served as president of the Las Cruces Symphony for seven years, president at the New Mexico School for the Blind and Visually Impaired for four years, president of the National Association of Parents of the Visually Impaired, and as Co-Chair for the National Agenda for the Education of Visually Impaired students. Donna also served on the Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce where she co-chaired the first Education Committee for the chamber.
Additionally she is a certified Pistol Instructor, Certified Refuse-To-Be-A-Victim instructor, Certified Home-Firearm-Safety Instructor, Certified Personal-Protection-in-the-Home Instructor, and a State of New Mexico Certified Concealed Carry Instructor.
