Gerrie Santos, named the 2014 Risk Manager in Residence by the NMSU Insurance Studies Program, was on campus this week visiting with risk management students. Santos is currently the Vice President of Corporate Risk Management for Parsons Corporation, an engineering, construction, technical, and management services firm based out of Pasadena, California.

She has extensive experience in the risk management field, having worked for the U.S. Navy, Walt Disney Imagineering, and Universal Studios in Orlando.

Santos had lunch with Gamma Iota Sigma, Risk Management and Insurance students, on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, in the Business Complex.

She gave an overview to students about what it’s like working in the risk management and insurance industries, stating that there are plenty of great opportunities right now with insurance companies.

She gave advice to students about job hunting, saying that it’s important to keep an open mind.

“If you get an interview opportunity in some place you’re not sure about, you should do the interview anyway.” It’s a good opportunity to expand your horizons and get to know new places and new companies. Santos said that another important job hunting tool is networking. “Get yourself out there and make connections.”

Tuesday evening Santos gave a presentation to the Student Center for the Public Trust and the Financial Management Association (NMSU FMA) student groups.

Santos’s visit was made possible by a generous grant from the Spencer Educational Foundation to the Risk Management and Insurance Studies program at NMSU.
