Cervantes currently serves as Chief of Staff for the Las Cruces Public School system, and has worked for the public schools system for several years.

Cervantes also has strong entrepreneurial roots. In January 2000, she and several family members co-founded Girl Effex, Inc., a make-up company marketed toward teenage girls. One of the inspirations for the company was Leslie’s daughter Alyssa who was, at the time, in her teens.

To show the Ambassadors that everyone has the capability to brainstorm ideas and to think as an entrepreneur, Leslie had them break up into groups for a few minutes to develop ideas for a new app, its purpose and uniqueness, and a marketing plan.

One piece of advice she offered the ambassadors interested in starting a new business is to make sure their business ideas are sustainable; having a plan is critical for the business to survive.

Leslie currently serves on the COB’s Business Advisory Council, has served on numerous community boards, and volunteers extensively. She graduated from NMSU’s College of Business in 1986 with a Bachelors of Business Administration in Human Resources Management.
