Growth of Social Responsibility Ads by U.S. Banks, 1992 to 2002

This article presents a longitudinal study of social responsibility themes in U.S. bank ads. Content analysis is used to examine television commercials for socially responsible advertisements. Findings indicate the communication of social responsibility in television commercials for banks has increased by 7.0% over the period studied.

Marketing Professors: Their Relevance

It’s not uncommon for marketing practitioners to question the value of marketing professors’ insights and expertise. Typically, these questions entail the relevance of marketing Ph.D.s’ backgrounds to their performance as teachers and the value of published scholarly research. My experience as a business manager and owner, academic department head, and professor suggests that such questions deserve closer examination.

Recently, my four-year-old son Evan was admitted to Memorial Medical Center (MMC), owned by LifePoint Hospital, for a small laceration to his forehead that required four stitches. It was a routine childhood injury; there was no head trauma or other serious problem.

Talking Points

For the first time in more than a year, New Mexico climbed out of the bottom five states for employment growth and tied for 39th among the 50 states. Las Cruces employment—total, goods producing and service producing—was unchanged. Rain in September went a long way toward replenishing depleted reservoirs, but much of the state still remains under drought conditions.
