At a regular meeting May 10, the New Mexico State University Board of Regents approved a contract with Garrey Carruthers who will serve as the 27th president of the university.
Carruthers will take the helm June 1 at a salary of $385,000. Carruthers also will not receive a raise during the five-year contract and there is no bonus payment at the end of the contract term. He also will not be eligible for a buy-out payment if he leaves the university early.
“I am delighted to be tapped to lead this great university,” Carruthers said. “Now that the search for a new president is over, it is time to focus on the enterprise – NMSU – our students, faculty, staff, and our state, and to commit to having pride in what we do, performing at the highest level, and always promoting the enterprise and not ourselves.”
The regents also approved the operating budget for fiscal year 2013-2014. The approved budget for all campuses is more than $678 million, with operating funds of about $610 million and plant funds of about $68 million.
In other business, the regents heard informational reports from Carruthers on economic development initiatives and on the New Mexico Legislature from Ricardo Rel, assistant vice president for government relations.
Athletic Director McKinley Boston also gave a presentation on the athletics strategic plan. Boston discussed five key priorities, including building a winning football program; sustaining commitment to broad-based excellence in all sports; building a strong, visible connection to the community; increasing community support; and building a solid organizational infrastructure.
The board presented a resolution during the meeting stating its commitment for NMSU to work to create a strong and respected athletic program that competes at the Division I FBS level. The resolution also highlighted the overall success that student athletes achieve in the classroom and on the court or field, and commended them and their coaches and faculty.
The board honored Interim President Manuel Pacheco with a resolution and its Regent’s Medal, an honor established 40 years ago to recognize persons who have made outstanding contributions to the university, to the State of New Mexico, or to the United States. Only nine other individuals have been recognized with the Regent’s Medal.
In presenting the medal, Cheney said, “We could recite a litany of Dr. Pacheco’s many accomplishments, but what we choose to speak to today is his passion for our state, his passion for the power of education to transform lives and his passion for NMSU. He leaves NMSU a better place than when he arrived and he leaves each of us better individuals for the time we were able to learn from his daily example.”
The Regents also recognized Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Jay Jordan, outgoing Associated Students of NMSU President Breeana Sylvas and outgoing Faculty Senate Chair Timothy Ketelaar. They commended presidential search chair Larry Lujan and the entire search committee for their service to the institution.
Finally, the board presented Above & Beyond Awards to Ruth H. Prescott, Ronald E. Logan and Francisco M. Martinez. The Above & Beyond Award recognizes full-time employees who go the extra distance in service to any and all aspects of the NMSU system. Individuals are recognized for performance that goes “above and beyond” their regular responsibilities and for demonstrating a positive attitude that inspires others.
Prescott, executive associate to the president, was honored for her consummate professionalism, especially during the search for a new president. During his presentation of the award, Pacheco said, “Let the record reflect that this search can be characterized by the grace and professionalism that she imprinted upon it through her efforts. We each in our own way establish an image of our institution by the manner in which we conduct ourselves before others. Ruth Prescott represented our institution to the public, to search committee members and to potential candidates in a manner that we might all take pride in.”
Logan and Martinez, both with ICT’s Telecommunications and Networking Services, were honored for the outstanding support they provided to the presidential search process. Along with others from their department, they stepped up to handle the audio/visual and webcasting of numerous events that occurred as part of the search. Those events ranged from listening sessions starting last fall to open forums recently held as part of the final interviews. In addition, they also recently took on the additional task of webcasting all Board of Regents’ meetings.
