Jim Peach, a Regents Professor in New Mexico State University’s College of Business, has been named as the university’s new faculty athletics representative to the NCAA. The appointment was made by NMSU President Garrey Carruthers and begins July 1.
“I’ve worked with the NMSU Athletics Department for years on a variety of issues, and I think the success of our athletics program at NMSU is an important university goal,” said Peach, who has been a professor at NMSU since 1980.
NCAA rules specify that each member university have a faculty athletics representative. Among the duties of the position are to sign off on the academic eligibility of student-athletes and to monitor the student-athlete experience to ensure the well being of student-athletes. The faculty athletics representative also works closely with the school’s athletics director and meets regularly with various groups, including the Western Athletic Conference, the Sun Belt Conference and the NCAA.
“I was pleased to hear that President Carruthers accepted my nomination of Jim Peach to follow Jack Thomas as our new faculty athletics representative to the NCAA,” NMSU Athletics Director McKinley Boston said. “Professor Thomas served NMSU very well in the role and displayed outstanding leadership in support of our student-athletes. I believe Professor Peach will have a smooth transition into this role. We all look forward to working with him and certainly wish Professor Thomas well in retirement as he tries to keep up with his grandson, little Jack.”
Jack Thomas, a professor in the NMSU College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, had served as the university’s faculty athletics representative since 2005.
“It is a lot easier to be the faculty athletics representative at NMSU than at a lot of other universities.” Thomas said. “Our coaches and athletic departmental staff have student-athlete welfare as their primary focus. Also, the over whelming majority of our student athletes are good citizens, who work hard in the classroom and in their sport.”
Peach has regularly attended NMSU football games for years. He also has NMSU basketball season tickets and often attends other NMSU athletic events.
“Dr. Peach is a loyal Aggie and one of the most respected faculty at NMSU,” Thomas said. “I think Jim is an excellent choice for this position and the university and our athletic department are fortunate that he agreed to take on this role.”
“Jack has done a magnificent job and he’ll be a hard act to follow,” Peach said.
