Awards Overview

Alumni Awards

Established in 1997 by the College of Business, the Hall of Fame award honors outstanding business college alumni who have distinguished themselves in their careers. Through the Hall of Fame, the college seeks to create visibility for its alumni and develop a strong relationship with the business community.
Created in 2006, the College of Business Traders Award honors individuals who have given exceptional service to the College of Business.
In 2009, the Traders Award was expanded to recognize outstanding contributions by corporations to the College of Business mission.
Created in 2021, the College of Business Lifetime Achievement Award honors individuals who have given outstanding contributions or service over their whole career.

Chairs

Established in 2004 with a $500,000 gift from Dean Garrey E. Carruthers and Mrs. Katherine T. Carruthers and matching state funds of $1 million from the State of New Mexico. The chair will contribute to NMSU’s focus on economic and community development, and help recruit and retain faculty.

Established in 2006 by Stan Fulton to honor outstanding faculty achievement and/or for recruiting and retaining distinguished faculty in the College of Business. The intent of the Chair is to enhance the University’s leadership, reputation, academic programs, outreach, and/or research in any of the fields and/or disciplines represented in the College. May be awarded to an Associate or Full Professor in any of the College’s academic departments who meets all or some of the following qualifications:

  • Has made outstanding research, teaching, and/or public service contributions that are widely recognized regionally, nationally, or internationally, as appropriate.
  • Has made significant contributions in his/her field of study.
  • Is an active and contributing member in the New Mexico State University system, and in community or professional organizations.
  • Has shown a history of and has the expertise necessary for mentoring junior faculty in the College in the pursuit of activities relevant to the college’s mission.

The Lionel Haight Chair began as a professorship with a $250,000 gift from Judy Gray Johnson and her husband, Michael, in 2010. With the goal of raising the Lionel Haight Professorship to a $1 million endowed chair, Johnson offered an additional $100,000 to match gifts totaling $100,000 given within two years. When that goal was met five months ahead of schedule, she doubled the pledge, offering another $100,000 matching challenge. Over the years, 151 individual and corporate donors gave to the chair. Dr. Lionel Haight was known for his demanding yet supportive teaching style and had a 45-year career at NMSU from 1927-1972.

The Bill and Sharon Sheriff Endowed Chair in Entrepreneurship, funded in 2013 through a gift of stock valued at more than $1 million, aims to attract and reward faculty who will provide leadership and expertise in cultivating a spirit of entrepreneurship in New Mexico and developing resources that will advance that goal in the state and region. The faculty member awarded the chair will also collaborate with NMSU’s Arrowhead Center, which is an engine for sustainable economic development and entrepreneurship.

Along with the endowed chair, the Sheriffs have established a scholarship for eligible business majors with an additional gift of more than $60,000.
