Bachelor of Accountancy

The Bachelor of Accountancy degree will prepare you for excellent opportunities in public accounting practice, and in business, government, and nonprofit organizations. You may also advance your education through the Master of Accountancy or the MBA degree.

This major is offered through the Accounting & Information Systems (ACCT/IS) Department.

Often called “the language of business,” accounting is a vital, dynamic field. Successful accountants have a solid business and accounting knowledge base as well as substantial analytical, interpersonal, and communication skills. This major helps you prepare for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Certified Management Accountant (CMA) exams.

CPA Licensure Requirements

Requirements to become a CPA are determined by the Board of Accountancy in the state in which you wish to become licensed in. All states require 150 credit hours for licensure. Therefore, a Bachelor of Accountancy does not meet the educational requirements to become a CPA. However, the additional coursework can be completed in the New Mexico State University Master of Accountancy. Some states, such as New Mexico allow applicants to take the CPA exam before completing the 150 hours required to be licensed.
